Alberta

In the middle of January I flew to Calgary to take part in a minimalist photo workshop with my old friend and mentor Marc Koegel and my new friend Olivier du Tre. The idea was to photograph the beauty of the Canadian Prairies in the starkness of winter, with snow covering the ground and the buildings, and just a glimpse of something else to bring the scenes to life. And sure enough when I arrived the evening before we started, it was freezing cold with a biting wind. The next day, however, the weather suddenly warmed up and what snow there was started to melt. Anyone from the area will tell you that this is typical of Calgary. The weather can change by tens of degrees overnight. Undaunted we set out anyway to find what we could.

Each day we explored and photographed a different part of the area surrounding the city, and the quickly changing conditions meant adapting to what we found and envisioning different final images. Fortunately there were lots of interesting arrangements of silos in huge fields as well as decrepit barns and houses. And the wide open skies were a welcome contrast to the mountain vistas everywhere in Vancouver. You can see my gallery of images from the trip here. Prints of images in various sizes are available for sale. See here for information regarding pricing and policies.
